Set to a fully orchestrated original score, Ori and the Will of the Wisps continues the Moon Studios tradition of tightly crafted platforming action and deeply emotional storytelling. From the creators of the acclaimed action-platformer Ori and the Blind Forest comes an adventure through a beautiful world filled with friends and foes that come to life in stunning, hand-painted artwork. The little spirit Ori is no stranger to peril, but when a fateful flight puts the owlet Ku in harm’s way, it will take more than bravery to bring a family back together, heal a broken land, and discover Ori’s true destiny. Moon Studios could have done a bit more work to smoothen this UI.Playable on: Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PCĮmbark on a journey in a vast, exotic world where you’ll encounter towering enemies and challenging puzzles on your quest, in the must-play sequel, fully optimized for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. These can confuse you and often make you run around in circles. The additional side missions put a lot of icons on the map. My only gripe with Ori and the Will of the Wisps is the map design and mission selecting. There’s even a Zelda-styled trading quest which I could not bother with too much trauma from the Link’s Awakening remake. The reward is nothing more than some in-game currency, of which there is plenty scattered around anyway. So you do have reasons to go back to older areas, but I never really felt the urge to. Unlike the previous game, Will of the Wisps features side quests and collectibles. ![]() ![]() Ori twirls and rolls through areas like a ballerina, and you may even here applause in your head once you stick the landing to a particularly complicated platforming challenge. ![]() Not only does it look good, but it also adds to the overall smooth platforming. Every leap, dash, or sword swipe looks well defined and snappy. The art style and colour palette is vibrant, and matches perfectly with the game’s tone, music and gameplay.Īdding to the art style and gameplay is the animation. You may think that it looks too similar to Ori and the Blind Forest, but you’ll realise it’s a huge upgrade once you go back and look at the first game. Not only does Ori and the Will of the Wisps play brilliantly, but it also looks gorgeous. Would it be weird if I used a John Wick reference here? Because Ori is surely the John Wick of spirit-squirrels… or whatever it really is. There are times when you’ll have to use platforming elements mixed with combat to overcome some enemies when done right, Ori is nigh unstoppable. The attacking animations are crisp and satisfying and don’t take anything away from the smooth platforming. These come in a variety of weapon forms, be it a sword or a mallet. Ori and the Will of the Wisps has also added in a lot of new combat mechanics. There are moments where you may not touch the ground for minutes, which is always a gold star for a platformer. Watching Ori float through an area using a combination of dashes, grapples, bashes and sand burrowing is akin to watching art in motion. The seamless transition between abilities and level design mechanics give you a sense of exhilaration when pulled off perfectly. Not only do the developers at Moon Studios use Ori’s abilities to add to the platforming element, but also use area based platforming features. The platforming is the crowning jewel for Ori. ![]()
